Limited Obstetrical Ultrasounds

When determined necessary by the LifeChoices medical staff, a limited obstetrical ultrasound may be offered with a positive pregnancy test.  The ultrasound would be performed by a trained nurse, under the supervision of a medical doctor.

The purpose of the limited ultrasound is to 1) confirm pregnancy and 2) determine if the pregnancy is viable, and 3) measure gestational age.  A viable pregnancy occurs when the fetus is in the uterus and a heartbeat is observed by a trained professional.

A urine pregnancy test can not determine a viable pregnancy.  A urine test uses the presence of the hormone hCG to indicate pregnancy. However, the hormone hCG may be present in a woman's urine up to 6-8 weeks after a miscarriage or vaginal/caesarian delivery.
